Masks of Africa - MS Social Studies

On Thursday, October 13th, Mrs. DelToro's elective, Hands-On Geography completed their African Unit with a collaboration project that was inspired by RVMS Art Teacher Mr. Triplett. 7th & 8th grade students in this elective class created 3D African Masks using cardboard, beads, rocks, and paint. This project took a couple of weeks for the students to complete from start to finish and ended with a Gallery Walk.

Students were to choose a tribe in Africa that used a type of mask in their culture. Next, students were able to use various museum websites to research what a mask from the tribe they had chosen would look like. Once students had completed their research they were given a blank sheet of paper to create a 2D drawing of what they wanted their final mask to look like. Then, was the fun of creating their 3D African Masks! Finally, students wrote an Artist Statement. The Artist Statement explained a little history of the African Tribe and what the masks was used for, and then the student's process of creating their 3D African Masks explaining the colors they chose, geometric shapes, and the significance of the animal they chose.

Students were to follow a rubric that gave specific details that were to be a part of this project from choosing the African tribe, creating their drawing and final mask, their artist statement, and presentation during the gallery walk.

Masks will be on display in Mrs. DelToro's room during Parent/Teacher Conferences this week. You are welcome to come and see these creations in person!
