FCCLA and Mrs. Litherland’s Intro to Family and Consumer Science (FACS) class are once again making Chicken Fried Rice for families during the holidays — marking the second year in a row for this meaningful project!
The group received a grant from Kids Feeding Kids, an educational program that teaches high school students about food insecurity and food systems by giving them the opportunity to plan, prepare, and distribute meals to families in their community. The program provides all the ingredients and containers, allowing the class to hand out meals free of charge at the high school.
Beyond serving the community, this experience gives students a valuable hands-on opportunity to learn essential cooking and food safety skills, as well as the importance of giving back — especially during the holiday season.
This year, meals will be distributed on the Thursday before Thanksgiving after school to families who sign up in advance. Mrs. Litherland’s class plans to prepare 250 servings of Chicken Fried Rice, ensuring families have one less thing to worry about during the week-long holiday break. The group is also partnering with JAG-K to help with distribution and is planning a special surprise treat for families to enjoy!
Those interested in receiving a meal can look for sign-up information coming out at the beginning of November!
Mrs. Litherland shared her gratitude for everyone who helps make the project possible:
“I just appreciate all the support and help from the students and staff who take their time to make this successful. We couldn’t do it without them. That warm feeling you get from knowing you’ve helped someone — I want my students to experience that and know they’ve made an impact.”
