On September 3rd, Megan Mance visited Mrs. Cole’s classroom to speak with 7th and 8th grade students about the dangers of drug use and vaping.
Before working at the State Penitentiary, Mance spent five years as a narcotics detective with the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office. Alongside Amy Theis, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) who also previously worked with LVSO, she helped create DOPE—the Drug Outreach Program and Education initiative. This program is designed to educate teens on the realities of drug use and the importance of saying no.
During the presentation, Mance discussed substances such as marijuana, fentanyl, and NBOMes. While covering fentanyl, she invited student volunteers to guess the lethal dose, then explained how the drug is manufactured and distributed.
One of her key messages was a powerful reminder: drug dealers do not care about the health or safety of the people they sell to—only about making money.
