4TH GRADE CARDBOARD AUTOMATAS

4th grade students have been working on Cardboard Automatas in MakerSpace with Mrs. Stithem. An automata is made by using a shoebox, skewers, straws and cams (cardboard circles or bottle lids).

The objective is to have gears, or cams, working together on the inside of the box. Students decided what object to "move" and created it on top of their box. For example: A bear drinking from a cup. The cup moves up and down when a lever is turned. Or a basketball moving up and down through the hoop.

Students enjoyed this challenge!
