Our Royal Valley Middle School 7th graders in Mrs. DelToro's Kansas History class recently participated in a hands-on Constitution Day activity. Students dove into excerpts from the Bill of Rights, exploring how our nation balances individual freedoms with civic responsibilities and seeing how these foundational ideas still apply to modern life.
To mark Constitution Day, our 7th graders worked directly with historical texts and connected their learning to state social studies standards:
Choices and Trade-offs: Students evaluated the decisions made during the Constitutional Convention and what it meant to create a limited central government.
Rights and Duties: Students looked closely at the 1st and 4th Amendments to understand the everyday responsibilities that come with protected freedoms.
Compromise and Beliefs: Students examined how regional differences shaped the final compromises written into the Constitution.
Adapting Over Time: Students explored how the amendment process allows the Constitution to change as society grows while keeping core principles intact.
By working directly with these primary sources, our students gained a clearer understanding of why we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17 and how these historic principles shape our community today.
