As we wrap up an incredible school year, we want to take a moment to reflect on the meaningful experiences our RVMS Native American History students have shared over the past several months. History is more than dates and facts in a textbook — it is about preserving traditions, honoring culture, and learning from the people who help shape our community.
A huge Miigwech (thank you) to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Language Department Director, Sogi LeClere, along with her team members: Dr. Robert E. Lewis Jr., Curriculum & Instruction Manager; Cindy LeClere, Language Instructor; Jayme Mitchell, Apprentice II; Nomkiwash Potts, Apprentice II; and Brennah Simon, Apprentice I.
Our students had the unique opportunity to learn the Potawatomi language directly from these incredible educators. Through practicing words and phrases, students were not only learning a new skill, but also helping preserve an important part of Indigenous culture and history. Watching students connect with the language and culture throughout the semester was truly a highlight of the year.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to JoAnna “Dumps” Mitchell, Title VI Representative from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Boys & Girls Club, for her support and dedication to our students.
To close out the year, students traded their pens for needles and thread as they learned the intricate art of Native American beading. This hands-on experience taught students about more than just craftsmanship, it taught patience, storytelling, and the symbolism woven into every design.
To our partners at Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, thank you for your generosity, knowledge, and commitment to our students. Your contributions have enriched both our curriculum and our school community.
And to our students: carry these lessons with you. Whether through a spoken word or a beaded design, you are now part of a continuing story.
