This week in Mrs. Litherland’s Culinary Essentials class, students have been hard at work preparing homemade breakfast burritos. Throughout the project, students practiced valuable lifelong cooking skills such as measuring ingredients, cracking and whisking eggs, frying sausage and bacon, setting timers, and learning basic kitchen safety and organization. These hands-on experiences help students build confidence in the kitchen while developing practical skills they can use for years to come.
The project was organized by FCCLA member Kiley Rogers as part of her STAR Event through Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Kiley’s project focused on encouraging healthier eating habits by preparing fresh, home-cooked meals rather than relying on highly processed foods. As part of the project, Kiley presented to the culinary classes about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Students then took the lesson a step further by working together to create breakfast burritos using less processed ingredients and learning how to prepare and freeze them for easy meals at home.
Once the breakfast burritos were finished, each student was able to take eight burritos home to enjoy with their families!
A special thank you goes to Debbie and David Parks, along with Holton Meat Processing, for generously donating all of the sausage! Another big thank you to Jerry Vornholt, Cole Vornholt, and Hanna Myers for donating the eggs! Your generosity helped make this possible for our students!
