On Tuesday, January 20th, RVHS Esports members traveled to Jeff West for an in-person match as part of Week 5 competition requirements. RVHS competed under the team name Purple Platoon, while Jeff West competed as Tigers Roar.
The teams faced off in a standard 3v3 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate match. Each player competed head-to-head against an opposing player in a best-of-three format until an overall winner was determined. RVHS fell to Jeff West by a score of 3–1. RVHS competitors included Molly Allen, Thomas Harman, and Zane Whiteman.
This was the only required in-person match of the season; all other competitions are played online from the RVHS Esports room against teams across the state. Currently, RVHS Esports is ranked 46th in the state, while Jeff West sits at 88th.
RVHS Esports Coach Trevor Krogan shared:
“We had a lot of fun meeting the other teams. Usually there’s no in-person interaction, so it was great to connect and enjoy some friendly competition. Even though the outcome didn’t go our way, the team gave it their best and continues to push toward that number one spot.”
Jeff West hosted the event, with Holton and Jackson Heights also in attendance to complete their Week 5 in-person match, competing in Mario Kart 8. KSHSAA currently allows Esports competition in Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Rocket League.
RVHS Esports practices Monday evenings after school, scrimmaging against schools across the state. Official matches take place on Wednesdays at 4:00 PM. Students interested in learning more about Esports are encouraged to stop by and see what it’s all about.
