JCYC

On Thursday, September 18th, six JCYC members (KiBo- Throssell, Lauryn Caviness, Madison Blackwood, Addie Lefferd, Alyssa Baker, and Mya Snyder) from RVHS traveled to the Sunflower Foundation in Topeka to attend a Leadership Workshop, where they took part in discussions focused on substance abuse. Students had the opportunity to hear about challenges other schools face with drug and alcohol use and to share ideas on prevention.

To close out the day, each school selected one issue to address in their own community. Our JCYC members chose vaping as their target problem. Their plan includes visiting the Royal Valley Middle School to give a presentation about making healthy choices and also reading books at the Royal Valley Elementary School. They would also like to host a Kahoot game during the RVHS lunch to highlight the harmful effects of vaping.

“I feel like it helped me to see the different problems in our community, and it taught me different ways to work with the people in my community and group to fix it—or at least think through ways to fix it,” said Ki-Bo Throssell.
