From the Lowell Milken Center of Unsung Heroes:
"Because of their work to bring Emma Darling Cushman’s unsung heroism to light, Nathan McAlister’s students (Colin Caviness, Luke Boyden and Colin Everts) at Royal Valley Middle School were given the honor of inscribing her headstone at the American Cemetery in Cairo. An American nurse, Emma saved the lives of thousands of Armenian children during the Armenian genocide. In addition to caring for countless orphans, she served as Acting Consul of the Allies and Neutral Nations, overseeing millions of dollars in relief funds and prisoner exchanges. After dying in 1930, Emma was buried in an unmarked grave in Egypt, her story buried with her—until the Kansas students discovered and shared it. A dedication service for the new headstone was held by Friends of the American Cemetery in Cairo on May 20."
