Students Visit Fire Station
All week students from RVES are walking to the Hoyt Fire Station to spend time with area fire fighters and learn about fire safety. They are learning "Stop! Drop! and Roll!" if their clothing catches on fire. They "wake up" in a dark room and have to feel with the backs of their hands to see if the door knob is hot. If it is, they lay a blanket down to block the smoke from seeping in and crawl across the floor to the window. They throw another blanket over the window sill to protect themselves from cut glass and crawl out to safety.
The next task for the students is the obstacle course. They crawl through a tunnel simulating a dark room, carry a CPR dummy to safety, carry a bucket of water, pull a rope to drag the hose across the floor and spray water on the simulated house fire. They were tired after going through the course twice each!
The reward at the end was sitting down to cookies and juice! Then they rode back to school in the fire trucks!
