                               ROYAL VALLEY-7X GRAND CHAMPIONS

The Royal Valley Native American Dancers traveled to Bartlesville, Oklahoma on January 14, 2012 to compete in the annual Battle of the Plains Native American Dance competition.  Royal Valley placed first in the competition for the seventh year in a row.  The competition is sponsored by Operation Eagle, which is the Indian Education Program through the Bartlesville Public Schools in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  The competition included a total of 10 schools.  Royal Valley Native American Dancers have always been invited to the competition to represent Kansas.  Royal Valley Native American Singers/Dancers is the only school-sponsored dance group in the state.  Currently the group is 82 members strong.  The group is composed of members from kindergarten to twelfth grade.  Sponsors for the group are Anita Evans-Title VII Indian Education Director for U.S.D. #337/ Royal Valley High School Teacher and Connie Peters-Math and Student Assistance Teacher at Royal Valley Middle School.  Lead singer for the group is Gubba Hale.
Royal Valley had a total of 59 dancers attend the competition, with 54 competing.  Royal Valley had 23 dancers place for points.  There were 26 total categories for competition.  Royal Valley filled 20 categories with dancers.  
Royal Valley had 8 Grand Champions-
First Place Winners:  Shanokwe Price-Girls Jingle (5-7);   Nahconbe Wahwassuck-Boys Fancy (5-7); KJ Miller-Boys Grass(5-7);  Mae Joslin-Girls Fancy(8-10);  Tamo Thomas-Girls Fancy (11-13); Zack Wahweotten-Boys Fancy (11-10);   Masen Spoonhunter-Boys Traditional(11-13) Brennah Wahweotten-Girls Jingle(14-18).

Second Place winners include:  Tanaya Mahkuk-Girls Cloth( 5-7);  Jaiana Serna-Blakemore-Girls Cloth(8-10);  Hayley Harman-Girls Jingle(8-10);  Dania Ortero-Girls Fancy(11-13);  Kikto Thomas-Girls Cloth(11-13);  Ninahii Frisby-Boys Grass(11-13);  Jayden Serna-Blakemore-Boys Traditional(11-13);  Nadas Thomas-Girls Cloth(14-18);  Doug Thomas-Boys Traditional(14-18)
Third Place winners include:  Ruben Tinajero-Boys Grass (5-7)); Komesh Spoonhunter-Boys Grass( 8-10);  Kishno Bell-Girls Fancy(11-13);  Felicity Price-Girls Cloth(11-13);  Pe-Qwas Hernandez-Girls Fancy(14-18);  Arrow Levier-Boys Grass(14-18).
Royal Valley Native American Singers/Dancers is supported by U.S.D. #337 through Impact Aid ,  Title VII Indian Education funds and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.   Anita Evans would like to thank all the organizations and people who have supported the singers/dancers for the past 17 years as she will be retiring from her teaching position after this school year.

"It was fun. I am really happy we won for Anita's last year with us," commented Douglas Thomas.
