Doves Visit RVES for Valentine's Day!

by Naomi Schuetz

February 14, 2012

What a perfect occasion to pet a dove on Valentine's Day!

RVES Computer Lab teacher Ms. Williams brought in two of her five pet doves to share with the elementary students.

The two doves she brought to school this year are hatchlings from her adult doves. Both doves are three years old and female. Ivy is the white dove and Cadbury is the fawn-colored one. One of the doves was born on Christmas and the other dove was born on Easter. They are Tangerine Doves, which are in the ring-necked dove family. They are cousins to the turtle (or morning) doves we see outside on the telephone lines.

Williams commented, "Each year since I have been here, I've brought one of the cages of doves in to share with the students. They love it! Most of them would never have the opportunity to pet a dove and they are surprised at how soft they are. Guaranteed smiles!"

First Grader Alexa exclaimed, "They are so pretty and soft!"
