Winter Comes and Winter Goes

But Great Memories and Sports Take Place Every Season

by Jeff Gustin

May 06, 2008

I know we set records for the most moisture (snow and ice) for the months of December through February, but that is not what I want to talk about.

Royal Valley High School has some great things happen this winter.   Lets start with the boys basketball team.  I have done some research to check on a few records.  Did you know that for the first time in Royal Valley high School's history, a boys' basketball team started the season with a 5-0 record?  The excitement in the gym during the month of December was awesome.

Weather, of course, forced the district to cancel the Royal Valley dual wrestling tournament.  In December, but by February, we were all watching some of the most exciting wrestling in school history.  For the second time, state champion in wrestling.  That champion is Alex Rupnick who wrestled at 189 lbs.

Girls' basketball also did its part to get into the record books this winter.  With a group of senior girls leading the way, the team now holds the record of having the second most wins in a season in Royal Valley history.  With an 18-4 overall record, this team gave the community a lot to be proud of this winter.

The weightlifting team also made its mark this winter.  The ladies team finished 3rd in the class of 4A state meet, while the guys finished in 5th place.  Individuals did well, also.  Jake Rodewald finished as the State Overall Champion for the second straight year in the heavyweight division.  Jessica Huff and Lan Danielson finished as State Runner-ups in their respective weight classes.

The RVHS band not only livened up each home basketball game, but just returned from a trip to Texas where they received a number of awards for their performances.

Check the Royal Valley web site (www.rv337.com) and you will be able to view many of the individual records that were set this winter in all sports.

Winter officially came to a close on March 20.  Spring activities have started and excitement continues.  Come and watch some of the activities and sports this spring.  The forensics team will be competing and the band and vocal groups will be performing in small and large group competitions.  The spring sports of baseball, softball, track and golf will be exciting to watch.  Don't miss an opportunity to support our kids and watch them perform.

The Spring looks to be entertaining, but WOW! What a winter!
